About Us

Vermont‘s retail businesses are facing more competition and greater challenges today than ever before. In such an environment, it’s essential to have an advocate to ward off burdensome laws and regulations that add to the cost and reduce the efficiency of doing business. Vermont’s retail businesspeople also need a source for products and services, at affordable prices, that all businesses require.

History

The Vermont Retail Association was founded in 1968 by some of Vermont's leading retailers to promote and protect the interests of, and provide money-saving services to, members throughout the state. The VRA’s membership includes a broad range of retailers and other businesses.

Representation

The VRA represents the retail industry before elected officials for policy and voting decisions. Our lobbying and issue education efforts play an integral role in the democratic process and ensure sound policy decisions. Just two examples of our work on behalf of members:

  • In 1999, VRA lobbied successfully for a sales tax exemption on clothing.
  • In 2006 we lobbied successfully for merchants’ right to retain unused balances of gift cards and gift certificates.  Through VRA’s efforts gift certificates are not subject to Vermont’s unclaimed property laws.
We are also one of the first stops for the media for background information in news stories.

Services

Additionally, we use our membership to negotiate services for independent retailers that may not be available to businesses individually. The services we offer have been developed in response to member needs and requests. The VRA strives to improve a business's bottom line by offering money-saving services of value to any business.

Governance

The VRA is governed by a Board of Trustees who serve three-year terms. The Board meets four times each year in different locations around the state. Other standing committees include: Finance, Executive, Marketing, Nominating, and Legislative.

Publications

The Retail Review is published six times a year and includes information about retail trends, statistics, current and proposed laws with which businesses need to comply, member profiles, and information about endorsed services. The DRM Legislative Updates and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Legislative Updates are published weekly while the Vermont legislature is in session (January through April)
