VRA in the NewsWCAX Spot2/7/2008 19} LEAD_VO Concern over lead paint in toys - has prompted Vermont lawmakers to take action.... Senators are considering a bill that would reduce the amount of lead contained in kids products - like toys and jewelry. The state standard would be much stricter then guidelines at the federal level. Advocates say this is about safety. ((tape 837 tc 33:56 Charity Carbine/VPIRG: It's important because for quite some time now we've seen millions of toys recalled because of dangerous levels of lead and this would go a long way toward protecting childrens health.//tc 37:37 Tasha Wallis/Vt Retail Association: We want to make sure all the merchants around the state understand what the rules are -- but also are well informed on what items that might contain lead might look like.)) More testinomy is scheduled on the bill .... if it were to pass -- it would take effect this July. The attorney general's office could then fine anyone who violated the law.
